This term our science topic is Solids, Liquids and Gases. We have been learning lots by using the Smartboard and carrying out experiments. When completing our experiments we have been writing up science reports explaining each stage. One pupil in particular, Mr Aiden Kelly, has shown a wealth of knowledge about our science topic-well done!

Talent Show Enterprise

Primary 5 have been working away to organise a talent show for the whole school. Each class has been informed to nominate one act from each class who will then perform in the show on the 24th of June. The children have been working in different departments to get the preparation work complete. Particular praise must go to the script department who were so enthusiastic and hard working. I am sure it will be an event to remember!!!

Scottish Poems

Today Miss McKee was pleasantly surprised as she heard the class recite their Scottish poem 'Circus". Not only were most of the class eager to say their poem in front of the class but also the standard was so high it was very difficult to choose! In the end Miss McKee chose 8 of the most confident speakers and each member of the class voted for their top 3. Our top 3 winners were Ewan, Jay and Amy. Well done to everyone. Ewan, Jay and Amy will need to keep practising as only one person can be chosen to recite their poem at the P6 Burns assembly on Friday 22nd January. Good luck!!!

Commonwealth Enterprise Sports Event

We are now well underway with the preparations for our sports event with primary 4. The class has been responsible for organising the events that will take place, how primary 4 will be organised into teams and will then be responsible for running the event on the day. It will be a lovely way for us to finish off our topic.

Commonwealth Games

We have been enjoying our topic this term in many different ways. We have made our own timelines on the history of the Games by choosing the most important pieces of information with our group. All groups worked really well and did well working in the time limits set.
Mrs Sloan set us a challenge to find out about some of the Commonwealth members and use that information to design a sports t-shirt for the country we were given. The results are looking very good and will soon brighten up our topic wall.
We have also been investigating the tradition of the Queen's Baton Relay and we will soon be designing our own baton.

Bridges Technology

A big thank you goes out to everyone who helped make Bridges to School a wonderful experience. Children from Kirklandneuk worked with children from St. James's Primary. One task involved working in the classroom, to work on the problem solving challenge of building standing bridge that could take the weight of a toy car from only paper, card and sellotape. Children were also able to build a much larger bridge, spanning across the length of the gym hall, with the help of civil engineers.

Homecoming

10 lucky P5's will be attending the Youth Highland Games with Miss McKee on Friday 27th November. 5 girls and 5 boys will spend the morning representing Kirklandneuk in a variety of games. If we are lucky enough to get a place in the final, the children will be attending the finals on Monday 30th November. A lovely way to celebrate St. Andrew's Day!

This week P5 have also been experiencing some other fun Scottish activities such as poetry, designing tartan on the computer for each group and Scottish food tasting! A nice run up to the holiday.

As part of our living things science topic we have been growing some runner beans and flowering plants. We have seen some good growth so far despite the dark and dull weather!

Commonwealth Games topic

P5 have been enjoying the start of their new environmental studies topic on the Commonwealth and the Games. We are hopeful that after we spend some time learning about the topic we will be able to hold our own mini Commonwealth Games with some pupils in the school.

Anti Sectarianism Assembly

Primary 5 have had a great term 4, we have all been working extremely hard. On the 8th May we had a joint assembly with St James Primary School on Anti Sectarianism. The children from St James walked round to Kirklandneuk and we had several rehearsals so that children from both schools could practise together, although we also practised on our own. We invited parents from both schools to attend and Mrs Convery Headteacher from St James also attended. At our assembly we discussed what Anti Sectarianism was and performed a short drama scene. The song both classes sang was 'My Friend' and it really was lovely. We had a collection and we raised £69, the children nominated "Make A Wish Foundation" to receive the donation. It really was great bringing the two schools together and after the assembly the children asked if they could all play together at playtime.

The whole school were involved in "Kirky's Got Talent" which was super and a great afternoon was had by all. One act from each class was to be chosen so we held auditions in our class for the children who wanted to perform. The children from p5 did a secret vote of who they wanted to represent p5 in ' Kirky's Got Talent." We all made a flag with our act's name on it and we were able to cheer them on, it was a great day.

Starling Learning

We had a visitor, Diane from Starling Learning, she taught us about wildlife, plants and birds. At the beginning of the Outdoor lesson we had a talk about wildlife habitat and she showed us some worm casts on the ground. She gave us bug tubs to collect any sort of mini beasts we could find. On our hunt we found 4 holes in the grass in the playground, Diane said they belonged to a male fox. It couldn’t be a female fox because it was too busy and noisy to have her cubs. It was great and really interesting.

Red Nose Day

We have also been involved in a sponsored skipathon which was great fun and we did that in out P.E times and we raised money for charity. We also dressed in red for Red Nose Day and that was also great fun and some of us were wearing red noses.

Primary 5 Secret Topic Revealed

Primary 5 have had a great term 3 we have been working extremely hard. Since the end of January we have been working on our secret topic and we transformed our whole class into a MAGIC CASTLE It was hard work but well worth it. We had an open afternoon for the primary 2’s and they all seemed to have great fun. Our open night for parents and grandparents was on Thursday 26th March and it was so exciting. We couldn’t wait to show off all our hard work. In groups we painted stones walls, we covered the windows in black milskin so it was really dark and magical. Fairy lights were added to the top of the walls to add extra effects. We made suits of armour, secret panels and in groups we made different pieces of furniture- a clock, treasure chest, a chair, fireplace and the door to our fabulous castle. Indivividually we completed different pieces of writing our magic spells, a witch or wizard biography, castle maps and our fantasy broomsticks. We have received lots of positive comments in our comment book from our families. It has been fantastic!!

This term primary 5 have been working on the Scottish Wars of Independence topic. We are hoping to visit Bannockburn in March when it opens again. For Science this term we have been learning about living things on earth. We were put in groups and were given a challenge about making a poster with accurate and appropriate information about our selected animals. These are our completed posters.
